I originally took a look at my fashion habits for environmental reasons, but I have since learnt more about the ethical cost to the individuals as well. For this reason I wanted to be a part of DUSEF to not only continue to better my own habits but to help grow a supportive, informative and inclusive community in Durham, for everyone on (or starting) their own sustainable and ethical journey!

I have always loved fashion, viewing it as a medium through which I can express my identity. However, fast fashion is having an increasingly destructive impact and I believe that fashion can be made both ethical and sustainable in an easy and fun way. I joined DUSEF as I want to help create an inclusive community which makes sustainable fashion more accessible and encourages others to adopt a more ethical stance when it comes to fashion!

I’m studying a Masters in Risk at Grey College. I joined DUSEF because living sustainably and ethically is central in my everyday life. Fashion is a huge passion of mine and therefore I want to showcase how fun, easy and essential it is to get behind the sustainable and ethical fashion movement for both our environment and the people behind the labour of our clothes. DUSEF is the perfect society to do this and I can already feel the great potential it has to make a difference!

Hello, I’m Emily and I’m this year’s President. I’m a History and Politics student in my 4th year at Castle. I’m so excited to get the society up and running and see how it progresses over its first year, as sustainable fashion really is an important cause. In the past, I’d always been someone who bought a lot of clothes without putting much thought into it, but over the past year I became more and more aware of the damaging impacts of the fast fashion industry. After deciding that in 2020 I was going to shop more sustainably, I realised that there wasn’t any society solely dedicated to this cause and decided to set up DUSEF. The response so far has been so exciting, and I can’t wait to meet everyone at our future events. If you ever want to know more about DUSEF, please feel free to contact me!

We need to dispel common misconceptions surrounding pre-owned clothing and show people that shopping second hand can be as rewarding and exciting as buying new, if not more so!

I’m in second year, studying Geography at Collingwood. DUSEF seemed like a really exciting platform to profile the damaging impacts of the fast fashion industry, whilst offering students the chance to grab quality second-hand items at a price that isn’t going to break the bank! Finding sustainable ‘steals’ from charity shops and the personal fulfilment that I have gained from owning a more mindful, slow and conscious closet, sparked my interest in wanting to promote such fashion ethics to the Durham Student body. As a brand new society, I’m really looking forward to seeing how DUSEF progresses and evolves this year!

Having grown up in Kenya I was always exposed to the idea of associating certain types of clothing or jewellery with a greater emotional or celebratory aspect which really doesn’t exist in the fast fashion market. Joining DUSEF seemed like the perfect way to improve my knowledge on social responsibility and ethical innovation whilst giving the concept of upcycling the appreciation it deserves. It’s been an amazing experience working with the rest of the DUSEF exec and I look forward to the rest of the year!

Hey, my name’s Maddie and I’m a second year at Collingwood studying Spanish and Arabic. I’ve always loved fashion, clothes and art but I got super into ethical and sustainable fashion a couple of years ago. Hearing about it from super cool people like Venetia La Manna and being able to see, first hand, the amazing artisan processes worldwide has meant I’ve developed a huge passion for it. I decided to join DUSEF as I really wanted to be a part of a like minded group where I could geek out on the things I love the most; I’m also super passionate about spreading the message and think that the society has the potential to create a huge shift both within Durham and further afield. I can’t wait to see you all at our events - COVID permitting!
