Durham University Sustainable and Ethical Fashion (DUSEF) is a new society founded this year with the aim of promoting more sustainable fashion practices in Durham. The fashion industry is incredibly damaging to the environment, with the textiles industry emitting 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases per year; this is more than the airline industry. Moreover, the industry relies on exploitative labour: some estimates have found that only 2% of workers who make clothing earn a living wage. DUSEF hopes to help tackle these issues by changing fashion habits in Durham. Over the next year, the society aims to:
1. Raise awareness for the issues surrounding the fashion industry, such as its damaging impact on the environment and its use of unethical labour, using social media, blog posts and guest speakers.
2. Provide students with ways of making more sustainable and ethical fashion choices, such as through hosting secondhand sales, clothes swaps and sharing advice via social media.
3. Fundraise money through events that will be donated to charities related to our cause.
